07 The Word of Christ Abiding in Us

‘Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among those who are sanctified’ (Acts 20:32)

‘My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.  Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart’
(Prov. 7:1-3)

‘Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light into my path…  I have put my hope in your word' (Ps. 119:105,114)

If we abide in Christ by the Spirit, then we have positioned ourselves for victory.  We have positioned ourselves in a place in which his word can abide in us.  If we do not abide in Christ, then there is no way that his life-giving word can abide in us.  The word of God is life and light, and, in fact, the incarnate word is the very person of Jesus (John 1:14).  His word is truth, and when his truth begins to abide in our hearts it sets us free to live the new victorious life in Christ (John 8:32), to experience the kingdom of God and to bear eternal fruit.  Jesus said that ‘Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’ (Matt. 4:4).  His word has to abide in the mind and heart of the new person: ‘I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds’ (Heb. 10:16).  His words are living; they produce hope when planted in the mind, and faith when rooted in the heart.
The word of God is the seed of his kingdom, and when it is planted in the soil of our hearts and lives, it has the potential to produce a harvest.  God does not intend that his word should return to him empty, but that it should accomplish what he desires and achieve the purpose for which he sent it (Isa. 55:11).
