Seeking First The Kingdom Of God
‘Your kingdom come, your will be
done on earth as it is in heaven’
(Matt. 6:10)
(Matt. 6:10)
‘But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well’ (Matt. 6:33)
‘You will seek me and find me when
you seek me with all your heart’
(Jer. 29:13)
(Jer. 29:13)
‘God is a rewarder of those who
diligently seek him’
(Heb. 11:6)
Before we look at how God’s will comes to
be manifested, we will look into the importance of seeking first the kingdom of
God. This is a crucial issue in our lives: will we seek for God’s
kingdom and his will to be done, or will we seek for our own will to be
done? God’s will is for the power and
authority of his kingdom to be established and made manifest in and through
us. However, we cannot truly seek the
kingdom of God without first having overcome our natural, human tendency which
is to seek after our own will, after what we think we need and must have and on
which we make our happiness depend. It
is our daily decisions and choices which will reveal which of these we are
really seeking. It is a matter of the
heart: ‘For where your treasure is, there
your heart will be also’ (Matt. 6:21).
The Holy Spirit within us will always desire the manifestation of God’s
kingdom and he will prompt us from within to seek this.
Before Jesus went on to minister the
kingdom of God to people, he first had to learn obedience (Heb. 5:8-9) and to
win this battle over the will of God in his life for himself. This battle took place in the wilderness
temptations. Would he choose to satisfy
his hunger by using God’s power for his own personal gain, or would he
surrender his very life and live by faith in God’s promises? Would he choose to test God in order to make
himself known? Would he bargain and bow
down to Satan, in order to have all the power Satan offered him, or would he
serve God alone? In each temptation, Jesus chose the will of God over his human will (Matt.
4:1-11).
