Being On Earth What We Are In Heaven
FROM what we looked at in the
previous chapter, we must have a clear knowledge and understanding of the will
of God (revealed in and accomplished by the finished work of Jesus) and also its
implications, in order that we might then embrace the new person that we are
created to be in Christ, and the new way of life that we are brought into in
Christ.
Having made a way for
the purification of our sins, and having brought many sons to glory, a new
phase then begins in and through our life. This phase is the revealing and manifestation
on earth of the fruit of Christ’s finished work. That which is to be revealed is the glorified
new creation. Jesus himself was the seed
planted in the ground from which this new offspring (created in his own
likeness) is brought forth. Just as God
said to Adam and Eve, ‘Be fruitful and
increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it’ (Gen. 1:28), so God now expects
this new creation to come forth and be manifested through Jesus Christ, filling
the earth with the knowledge of his glory.
Therefore, despite what
our initial reasons may have been for becoming a believer, we need to
understand that such things as attending church, doing good works and trying to
live a good life (as necessary as these things are), are not the ultimate aim
of what this new life of the believer in Christ is about. These things are good and necessary, but
being a new creation (and therefore living the kind of life that we are
destined to live on earth as the children of God) goes far beyond these things. God’s call to his people is summed up in the
words of Isaiah 60:1-2, ‘Arise, shine,
for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you… the Lord
rises upon you and his glory appears over you.’
Furthermore, the old life,
the life lived in the flesh, had its expiry date tagged onto it.
