02 Out Of Slavery Into Glory

‘In Christ we have been brought into fullness’
(Col. 2:10)

God Dealt Once And For All With The Root Of Our Problem
AS human beings, the way we are living and the care of our present daily needs are often the primary things that occupy our thinking.  However, we are under the wrong impression if we think that if all our natural needs are met, then our soul will be content and at peace.  The journey of the Israelites through the desert (see Ex. 15-17) illustrates how deep-rooted this kind of thinking can be together with its impact on our attitudes towards life, relationships and God.  This is, of course, a trap in which non-believers are caught up. However, it is not only non-believers who struggle in this area, because even we as born-again believers can become victims of the same kind of thinking, due to lack of knowledge and spiritual growth.
Our earthly life and our daily needs are very important to God.  The ministry of Jesus proves this.  But from his perspective our daily needs are bound up with the state of our spirit, soul and body.  The state of our spiritual life has a direct impact upon the emotional, material and social dimensions of our life.  Therefore, the level at which God begins to work in order to solve this problem, and to bring order and life to the natural realm, is the level of the spiritual.  The most important thing to him is our redemption and justification.  This effects our spirit and our eternal life as well as our soul and body, and, as a consequence, the whole of our earthly life.
When out in the street doing evangelism, I have met many people who do not believe in God.  I often ask these people, “But if there were a God, what would you want him to do for you?”  They all seem to respond to this question in more or less the same way: “Can he heal me?  Can he help me financially and with my needs?  Can he bring world peace and end war and poverty?” and so on.
Naturally, we all want God to deal with our endless needs. However, just as with garden weeds, unless God deals with the root problem, then no matter how much we try to fix our broken lives, the brokenness and problems that need solving will never end, and neither will our heart be happy or our soul be free.
