Understanding God’s Word
Hearing or reading God’s word is one thing, but
understanding it on a spiritual level is quite another. In order for us to step into the person that
we have been born again to become and to live by faith our life on earth as it
is in heaven, the word of God has to penetrate our spirit and renew our mind. Just because our ear is familiarised with hearing
God’s word, it does not mean that we have really understood it. Information and revelation are two
different things. The tendency of our human mind is to feed on and
accumulate information. This is one of
the reasons why our understanding of the word of God often remains in the realm of
theory, without our coming to experience what we have heard. The new person made in the image of Christ is meant to
grow into this image and to manifest it by feeding on the revelation of the
word of God.
We can see an example of this in the case of
the two disciples on the Emmaus road (Luke 24:13-35). These disciples were familiar with the prophetic
scriptures, as well as having been told in advance (by Jesus himself) about the
events that would take place in Jesus’ life. Yet they evidently had not understand the meaning
and the implications of what they had been taught and told, so as they walked
along the Emmaus road, they were grieved in their hearts. Their faces were downcast. As he spoke to them, Jesus pointed out the true
reason underlying their grief: ‘How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the
prophets have spoken!’ (Luke 24:25).
Foolishness and slowness of heart – these were the two things which were preventing
them from understanding what they had been taught concerning the death of
Jesus. Furthermore, these things were
also preventing them from even recognising Jesus himself, although they had
been with him for the past three years!
